England Call-up for Handsworth Grange Student

Published 17/05/2023

A Sheffield student has been selected to represent the country at an international ice hockey tournament next month.

Alfie White, 12, from Handsworth Grange Community Sports College has been selected for the England U13’s ice hockey squad.

Earlier this year, Alfie was invited by the England National Team Programme to take part in trials, eventually leading to him being selected to represent England.

The trials are 12- hour days, made up of on and off ice sessions. There were 75 players in the very first trial, with the final team of 20 being selected after 5 trials.

Alfie’s local team Sheffield U12s are the current National Champions and have just won the league unbeaten. The team will be heading down to Cambridge next month for the National Finals, where the top 8 teams in the country complete to be crowned National Champions. ECFA)

Alfie’s P.E Teacher at Handsworth Grange Jack Montgomery said: “We are delighted to see Alfie achieve his England call-up; it is no surprise given his approach to P.E here at Handsworth Grange.”

“He is very humble and grounded in the way he approaches sport and treats both his teammates and competitors with the upmost respect.”

"We are delighted for Alfie and his family; we wish them every success.”
