Mayor Francisco Valenzuela Visits HGCSC

Posted 22/03/2018 by Dial, L

We were lucky enough to welcome Mayor Francisco Valenzuela from our twin city of Estelí in Nicaragua and his interpreter Coralie Hopwood. He was given a true Handsworth Grange welcome with a tour of the school by Cameron Smith followed by a presentation by Y9 pupils in Spanish. True to form our pupils were eager to engage and really enjoyed asking lots of questions - all in Spanish, I might add! After a light lunch they were joined by past pupils who presented The Mayor with a copy of the book they were involved in creating.

The Elder Twins Storyshare Project

The Sheffield Estelí Society was formed in 1984 to raise awareness and solidarity with communities in Sheffield's twin town of Estelí in Nicaragua. The Storyshare Project was developed after a visit in 2012 by Coralie Hopwood, who noticed the joy on the faces of the children and residents as they shared stories. She created a project that would nurture the process of discovery in young people and remember the value of their elder neighbours and family. Children from Sheffield schools interviewed their families and shared these stories with children in Estelí, who had done the same and it proved a wonderful bridge between the two towns and an opportunity to gain wisdom from older colleagues.

We have been very lucky to be involved with this project and extremely proud of the finished book.
