History – information for parents.
We have a number of key issues and developments to help improve exam results in our subject.
This year your child will receive to take home a cd-rom containing the 200 page text book we use to study the ‘History of Medicine’ [a major exam component.] This will be used for homeworks, to enable students to catch up on lessons missed, to help with topics they might find difficult as well as being invaluable for revision. Later in the year we expect to add a cd-rom for the ‘American West’ unit. Could we ask that you make sure these are returned to school at the end of the Yr.11 exams.
Coursework makes up 25% of the exam marks so it is essential that all work is fully completed [deadlines for the work are in the school calendar]. Yr 11 should hand in their final assignment [based on this month’s visit to Conisbrough Castle] by October half term. We will inform you through both the student subject profile [report] and through an individual letter if your child is missing any coursework. Both Mr. Beddus and Mrs Cooksey are available most lunch times and after school to help pupils who have not completed work for any reason.
On the 23rd. February we will be running a Yr11 trip to help our students with their final exam. In the morning we will visit Wakefield to see a performance of the ‘Doctor Show’, a theatre presentation based on the ‘Medicine’ exam and organised by the exam board. In the afternoon we will move on to Leeds to visit the Thackery Medicine Museum. Your child will be given a letter detailing the cost and organisation of this trip later this half term.
As a department we organise the sale of CPG revision guides covering both the ‘Medicine’ and ‘American West’ topics. Purchased through the school they can be bought for £2.50. We will also provide a work booklet to go with these. An order form will be given to your child at the start of next term.
