2012 will be a year to remember in the UK, with the Olympics, the Paralympics andthe Queen's Diamond Jubilee offering schools a unique opportunity to report on historic events.

 

As the Olympic broadcaster 2012, the BBC wants to help schools from all over the UK become news-makers in their communities.

 

Through School Report, the BBC is inviting every secondary school in the UK to get involved in reporting throughout the year, both on Olympic-related topics and other issues of interest to young people. Using lesson plans and materials from the School Report website, and with support from BBC staff and partners, teachers can help students develop their journalistic skills to become 2012 Reporters.

 

Pupils participating in the BBC's news-making project for schools are usually 11 to 14, but to encourage more people to enjoy the experience of reporting during this special Olympic year, School Report is opening its doors to students aged between 11 and 16.

Older students are also able to get involved as mentors and leaders, facilitating the work of the younger reporters. In some areas of the UK, entire schools are involved in the project!

 

School Report News Day

On School Report News Day - 15 March 2012 - School Reporters and the BBC will come together to form a single reporting team working to a single deadline.

Thousands of students will be involved, telling the world what 2012 means to them and about other issues about which they are passionate.

 

The day will see students reporting the news for real with an authentic audience, created by the BBC linking to the schools' websites where pupils work will be published.

Coverage of their activities will appear on BBC programmes and services, and together, schools and the BBC will provide become a huge network of broadcasters.

 

Keep reporting

School Reporters have the opportunity to carry on making news during the summer term as the BBC continues to feature and link to reports made by students.

In addition, there are other reporting opportunities for schools, such as during the Torch Relay, which will stop in over 70 places around the UK between 19 May and 27 July 2012.

 

Other reporting opportunities for schools will be available at the time of the Olympic and Paralympic Games from 27 July to 9 September 2012.
